David and Goliath: The Whole Story

We have all heard how David was such a hero and took out Goliath, saving Israel. But have we looked into WHY David did it? Was he a “savior”, a selfless hero? Was he noble? Well, we are led to believe that, but that’s not the whole story! He may have been all of those, but he was also many other things. Let’s go through that story in First Samuel, Chapter 17 step-by-step and see things that you may not have been told, or realized!

10 or 9?

There have been discussions about putting the 10 Commandments in public places. Those that are against it, say that the Government should not endorse Christian principles. They don’t realize that those Commandments are Jewish! There is no record of Him repeating them with a passion to anyone or any crowd! He was not into rules, but relationships. As a Christian myself, I don’t want the 10 Commandments in public places, I want something much, much stronger!

Third Commandment

Of the Ten Commandments given to us in both (Exodus 20:2-17) and (Deut5;6-21), only one has a punishment promised for the violator! It seems to me that it must be the most important commandment, and not to be taken lightly. It is sad how many modern-day translations don’t see it the way that I see it! Some say “do not take the name of the LORD in vain”, while others say “Don’t misuse the name of the LORD”. There is a huge gap between the two meanings, as they have nothing in common, except the LORD’s name!

Deadly End or Dead End?

There is a proverb in the book of Proverbs, that is of such stature that it is found in two separate places, both as Proverbs 14:12, and Proverbs 16:25. In the Hebrew style, most such repetition occurs immediately, for the sake of emphasis. So to have a phrase found in two completely unrelated places is very different, in fact, unique. I want to analyze this twice-stated proverb, and try to see what it really means to us today.

Names of God

Many of us have heard the phrase “names of God”. I have even heard of Bible Studies looking at that long list of names for God found in scripture. Someone compiled that list by going through the Bible and finding every single name someone either gave to God or used to address God. One such list can be found at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Names_of_God_in_Christianity. Some of these lists go beyond just the name and look at the name’s meaning. One day as I was thinking about this, I realized something that none of these lists talked about: I also have had a lot of names throughout my life. The same goes for everyone in my family, and everyone I have ever met. What do all these names mean?

Who’s the High Priest?

Many of us know the story of how Jesus was called to defend himself before the High Priest and the rest of the council.

Matthew 26:62-65: Then the high priest stood up before them and asked Jesus, “Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?” But Jesus remained silent and gave no answer. Again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?”

“I am,” said Jesus. “And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.”

The high priest tore his clothes. “Why do we need any more witnesses?” he asked. “You have heard the blasphemy. What do you think?”
